A Tumble of Tabbies

We can accommodate seventy felines in our cattery, and are nearly always close to capacity, so it was fortunate for the tabbies that their farmer owner telephoned just after we had had a wonderfully successful week of re-homing.

Cats are mature at 6 to 8 months old, carry kittens for about 2 months and can conceive again within 10 days of giving birth, so it is possible for a female to give birth to five litters a year, each litter containing from three to five kittens.

The farmer had attempted to control the breeding of these semi-feral barn cats, but as you can see, one tabby looks very like another, some slipped through the neutering net and in no time at all there were twenty! We happily agreed to take fourteen and here they are (all except Basil, who successfully evaded the camera).

After eighteen months of constant, gentle work by our cattery staff and volunteers, ten tabbies were tamed and found happy homes. The other four (including Basil) are still very wary of strangers and have been given the freedom of the Sanctuary whilst we continue to socialise them.

Welcome to Ferne!

Founded by the late Nina,
Duchess of Hamilton & Brandon, at the beginning of the Second World War, Ferne Animal Sanctuary overlooks the River Yarty Valley in Somerset.

We accept any animal whose life is in danger and for whom we have room. We actively seek caring homes for cats and dogs within a 30 mile radius of the Sanctuary. Potential adopters living outside this 'magic circle' might like to drop in on Gemini and Colonel Beau who have gorgeous felines looking for homes countrywide and paw-mark where you can find lonely animals and great links.

Our other residents, which range from cows to chipmunks are not rehomed and stay with us for the rest of their lives. No animal is ever put to sleep unless our vet advises that its quality of life is no longer viable. An activity we regard as a vital part of our work is the task of helping the young to understand the needs of animals and to this end we are always happy to welcome groups of young people to visit Ferne.

Recently we have added an education area to accommodate visiting classes. If you share our concern about the welfare of abandoned animals and believe, as we do, that they have a right to life, please help us now. For more information about the principles underlying the work we do at Ferne Animal Sanctuary, please do not hesitate to contact us.
