Ferne Animal Sanctuary has been saving the lives of unwanted and abandoned domestic and farm animals for over 70 years.  The Sanctuary which is open to the public is set in 51 acres of beautiful countryside, including a conservation area, nature trail, picnic areas and restaurant.

JOB TITLE: Animal Care Manager


INTERFACES:  Senior Management Team, Animal Care Attendants, Employees /Trustees, Customers / internal and external stakeholders, Media / Charitable Trusts/Corporations/Community

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:  To be responsible for the effective and efficient daily care, safety and management of Ferne Animal Sanctuary animals, except the dogs and cats.   Manage, lead and develop the Animal Care Team.  Work alongside the Rehoming Centre Manager and deputise during absence.  Work flexibly to ensure excellence in animal care. 


  • Develop the Animal Care Strategy in line with Sanctuary Vision, Values and Objectives.

  • Work with the Operations Manager to develop the visitor offer and enhance opportunities for visitors to appreciate our animals

  • Review status of animals in each section each morning with Section Heads, organising and allocating work on a daily basis in accordance with procedures and specific animal needs.

  • Ensure that all daily feeding, cleaning and roaming routines are documented for each animal section.

  • Ensure treatments and medications are issued by staff at correct times and that progress of sick animals is documented and reported throughout the day.

  • Organise Veterinary visits where necessary.  Keep records of all veterinary visits and instructions for animals.                                                   

  • Update and keep accurate animal profile records using the Enterprise MRM database.

  • Develop and deliver enrichment programmes for all species at the Sanctuary

  • Keep a register of all animals residing at the Sanctuary.

  • Ensure animals are micro-chipped, ear-tagged and licensed appropriately in compliance with identity and DEFRA regulations where necessary.

  • Maintain dialogue with DEFRA, liaising over required documentation and correspondence concerning animals.

  • Deal with animal movements, births and deaths in compliance with regulations.

  • Source and instruct suitable services to destroy animals in a humane manner and dispose of bodies in accordance with veterinary instructions, ensuring records and movement sheets are accurately completed and filed.

  • Establish new procedures in cases of national alerts or outbreaks in conjunction with DEFRA and senior management team.­

  • Organise animal containment in the event of infection or isolation and instruct staff in accordance with procedure.

  • Arrange for vaccinations due to be given by Section Heads or other trained staff, ensuring proper documentation.

  • Ensure that medical cards are maintained for all animals showing their health status and any interventions.

  • Liaise with colleges and schools over work experience students, ensuring safeguarding and health and safety standards are strictly adhered to.

  • Liaise with the Fundraising and marketing team for special events and shows,

  • Collaborate closely with the Estate Manager over building works and maintenance schedules where animals and their locations are affected.

  • When required act as spokesperson for Ferne Animal Sanctuary, including interviews to the local and national press.

  • Actively build relationships with local supporters, members of the public, media, interest groups and other organisations to promote the work of Ferne Animal Sanctuary.

  • With the CEO, agree an annual budget for approval.  Monitor expenditure regularly and ensure that it is within the agreed budget at all times.

  • Lead the recruitment,  induction and  line management of assigned staff, including annual review, objective setting, identification of training and development and performance management

  • Ensure that all staff understand the importance of excellent customer service and that they deliver customer service of the highest standard at all times.

  • In conjunction with the Volunteer Coordinator develop and maintain a base of volunteers with the appropriate skills and aptitudes to assist in various Animal Care roles.

  • Submit animal care reports to the Trustees on a scheduled basis.

  • Attend meetings and training as directed.

  • Ensure that all duties and responsibilities are discharged in accordance with the Charity's Safeguarding, Health & Safety and Equal Opportunities policies.

  • Be familiar with all aspects of safety at work including Fire and Health and Safety regulations.

  • Adhere to all Sanctuary policies and procedures.

  • Adhere to the legal responsibilities of the Sanctuary.



The hours of work for this role are Monday - Fridays. In addition as part of you weekend duties you will be required to act as Duty Manager on a rota basis.

 The Sanctuary reserves the right to vary or amend the duties and responsibilities of the post-holder at any time according to its needs.  Job descriptions only reflect 80% of a role and are not an exhaustive list of duties.

Ferne Animal Sanctuary strives to provide care and refuge for unwanted domestic & farm animals. The Sanctuary rehomes dogs & cats within a 30 mile radius of Ferne. Some horses & ponies are available for permanent loan; all other animals remain at the Sanctuary for the rest of their lives. We rely entirely on donations & legacies to continue its work. Some of the animals come to Ferne because they have been neglected or are no longer wanted. Others come to us because of circumstantial changes of their owners. All animals are given the care, attention & TLC they need to enjoy a happy life while they are at Ferne.
