We thought we’d introduce you to our 7 resident pigs here at the sanctuary and give you some fun pig facts!
🐷Blossom is a 9 year old mangalica pig who came to ferne with her daughter Billie as their owner was unwell.
🐷Billie is a mangalica x saddleback she is 5 years old.
🐷Moon is a Kunekune who was abandoned at another sanctuary, so we don’t know her age or much else about her.
🐷Ruffles is a Kunekune who came to us as her owners did not have enough land to keep her, she is 9 years old.
🐷Pinky🐷Perky🐷Georgie all came is as an accidental litter and their owners lost their land. They are 2 and a half years old.
🐽 Contrary to popular belief, pigs are very clean animals! They wallow in mud to keep cool as they have hardly any sweat glands!
🐽 Pigs have the intelligence of a human toddler and can learn their name in 2 weeks!
🐽 Pigs have very poor eyesight, their snouts do most of the work, they can smell 2000 times better than we can!
🐽 Pigs are sociable animals, they form close bonds with one another and will often sleep snout to snout!

Diego initially had one regular handler of his choosing. He has now chosen his next handler, Chloe. To help set them both up to succeed we consider the environment we are working in ie somewhere he is familiar and relaxed in, his mate Manuel is present but kept occupied nearby. Manuel has a tendency to interfere if he can! Having a new handler, we started giving him tasks he is confident and familiar with to build on the trust. We have been working with him to shape various behaviours using a shaping plan. Clicker training has also been successful, he has learned to target his headcollar and put his nose in it to earn a treat.
We have found using a bumbag rather than coat pockets to keep treats in during training stops us getting mugged when we are around them with a coat on!😂 thank you @the_susan_george
for donating a bunch of these!
