Rabbits are often seen as low maintenance pets, but did you know they need far more than a hutch and some carrots to live happy, healthy lives?
If you’re considering getting a pet rabbit, it’s essential to understand their needs before making the commitment. That’s why we’ve created our Family Rabbit Care Sessions, running every Wednesday during the school holidays at Ferne Animal Sanctuary.
These fun, interactive sessions are designed to help families learn what it really takes to care for rabbits – from their housing and diet to their emotional needs and daily care routines. Whether you’re seriously thinking about welcoming a rabbit to your home, or just want to educate your children about animal welfare, this is the perfect place to start.
Rabbits as Pets: More Than You Might Think
Many people are surprised to learn that rabbits need just as much care and attention as a cat or dog. They are intelligent, social animals who thrive when they have:
-
Lots of space to hop, stretch, and explore – much more than a small hutch can provide
-
Daily interaction and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and loneliness
-
A healthy, balanced diet, including hay, fresh greens, and limited pellets (no, carrots aren’t always the best treat!)
-
Bonded companionship – rabbits are highly social and usually do best in pairs
-
Understanding of their body language and behaviour, which is subtle but very expressive
Unfortunately, many rabbits are surrendered to rescues or suffer poor welfare simply because their owners didn’t realise how much care was involved. Our goal is to make sure that every rabbit goes to a home that is truly prepared – and that starts with education.
What to Expect at Our Family Rabbit Care Sessions
Led by one of our knowledgeable animal care team, each session will guide you through the essentials of rabbit care. Topics include:
🐰 How much space and enrichment rabbits need to stay active and engaged
🐰 What to feed them (and what foods to avoid!)
🐰 How to understand rabbit behaviour and body language
🐰 The cost, time, and responsibility involved in rabbit ownership
🐰 How to create a safe, stimulating home environment
These sessions are suitable for all ages, making them ideal for families to learn together. Whether you’re just starting to explore the idea of getting a rabbit or looking to improve your knowledge before adopting, this session will help you make an informed and compassionate decision.

Let us help you get off on the right paw. Join us this summer and learn what it really means to welcome a rabbit into your family.
We look forward to seeing you – and helping you take the first step toward responsible rabbit ownership.
