A black cat is for life, not just Halloween
As Halloween approaches, black cats pop up everywhere. They are in shop windows, on decorations, and a costume of choice for trick or treating. But when it comes to finding a real black cat a home, the picture can be very different.
In a 2025 survey by Agria Pet Insurance, nearly two thirds of 40 UK rescue centres said black cats were the hardest colour to rehome. We feel that here at Ferne too, and it’s a reminder that a cat’s (or dog’s) coat colour can affect whether someone gives them a second look.
There are likely a few reasons behind this. Black cats can sometimes be harder to photograph, particularly in poor light, meaning their expressions may not stand out as clearly when someone is scrolling quickly through rehoming profiles. There also seems to be a growing preference for colourful, distinctive and ‘Insta-ready’ pets that catch the eye immediately, which can leave black-coated animals overlooked. But a photo (or a coat colour) can only tell you so much about the animal you might share your life with.

Meet Timmy Spatula
If ever there were a cat whose personality deserved a closer look, it’s Timmy Spatula. Our team describes him as lively, energetic and hilarious. He’s had a rocky start, though we don’t know much about his past, and he’s now looking for the right home where he can enjoy his next chapter.
Timmy may be able to live with other cat friendly cats or dogs, provided they’re introduced carefully. He’ll also need access to safe outdoor space away from roads and lots of people. His profile is a good reminder of what matters when choosing a pet – looking at the animal behind the photo, and whether your home can meet their needs.
You might come to a rehoming page because a cat catches your eye. That’s a lovely place to start. The next step is taking time to learn what they’re like and what life with them would involve. Does an energetic cat suit your household? Can you offer the outdoor space they need? If you already have pets, are you ready to manage introductions at their pace? Those questions help give a rehoming the best chance of working for everyone.
Black cats need people who will look past the seasonal stereotype and get to know them as individuals. Some will be playful and full of beans, others may prefer a quieter home and time to build trust. Their coat colour cannot tell you which.
Rehoming a rescue pet can be incredibly rewarding, but it is a lasting commitment, and it isn’t right for everyone. An animal may need patience as they settle into unfamiliar surroundings, as well as the everyday care, time and expense that come with having a pet. At Ferne, we work to match each animal with a home suited to their needs, and our dedicated team can offer guidance throughout the rehoming process and support afterwards.
So give those gorgeous black-coated cats and dogs a second look, and if Timmy sounds as though he might be the right companion for you, read his profile and speak to our team. The best reason to welcome him home is one that will last long after Halloween.
