Bertie

In 2025, as members of the National Equine Welfare Council, we worked alongside another charity to help a group of donkeys whose sanctuary had been forced to close permanently. Among them were two quieter, older donkeys, Jemima and Bertie, who likely wouldn't cope as well in a large busy herd. It was decided that they would come to Ferne, to enjoy some peace, comfort and care in their golden years. On arrival, Jemima urgently needed specialist dental treatment after being found to have severe periodontal disease. Her condition required significant veterinary care, with the initial treatment costing £2,000. Thankfully, Jemima is now enjoying life pain-free, although her condition will need careful monitoring and management for the rest of her life. Throughout Jemima’s treatment, Bertie has been a constant and loyal companion. The two are very attached and don't like being apart, so Bertie accompanies Jemima on her veterinary trips, helping to keep them both calm and reassured. His presence makes these visits much less stressful for Jemima. Jemima and Bertie are looking for sponsors to help with the cost of their care. If you would like to support them and the sanctuary, sponsor Bertie and/or Jemima today.
