About :
In 2025, as members of the National Equine Welfare Council, we worked alongside another charity to help a group of donkeys whose sanctuary had been forced to close permanently. Among them were two quieter, older donkeys, Jemima and Bertie, who likely wouldn't cope as well in a large busy herd. It was decided that they would come to Ferne, to enjoy some peace, comfort and care in their golden years. On arrival, it quickly became clear that Jemima urgently needed specialist dental treatment. She was suffering from severe periodontal disease. Our vet, who is a dental specialist, said he has never seen a mouth that bad in person. Her initial dental treatment cost £2,000, but thankfully, Jemima is now enjoying life pain-free. However, her dental condition will need careful monitoring and management for the rest of her life to ensure she remains comfortable and happy. Throughout it all, Jemima has had the comfort of her loyal companion, Bertie, by her side. The pair are very attached, and Bertie even accompanies Jemima on her veterinary trips to help keep them both calm and reassured. Jemima and Bertie are looking for sponsors to help with the cost of their care. If you would like to support them and the sanctuary, sponsor Bertie and/or Jemima today.
