PAWS AROUND EXETER

River

Inspired by many walk along (and in!) the River Exe with my spaniel Ivy, this design shows the river spiraling around the body of the sculpture with many dogs and their owners enjoying the water and riverside as it wends its way out to sea.

The design showcases Exeter’s extensive cycle path network and includes an electric bike-rental too. A jogger is also shown, and on the water dogs swim, kayak and paddle board.

This design attempts to show the places that my dog is happiest of all in Exeter, and includes the Devon flag and signage for the river, quayside and Leaf Land to ground it firmly in the city.

ARTIST:

Steph Selway

My style is whimsically illustrative and heavily influenced by childrens illustrators- the late great Judith Kerr in particular! I aim to show movement and tell stories with my drawings. I particularly enjoy it when children respond to my images by tracing the lines or mimicking the movements. I was so excited to see this project as I live in Exeter with my family which includes a dog and immediately had so many ideas! The final design is inspired by the many happy dog walks we took when we were living by the quay and riverside in the wonderful community of St Thomas.
